George Whitefield (1714-1770) (pronounced Whitfield) was an ordained English Anglican priest who, early on, was barred from preaching in Anglican pulpits due to his bold comments about false teachers in the Church of England. As a result he began preaching outdoors to various groups of people which led to him becoming one of the most well known itinerant preachers of his day. He faithfully and emphatically preached the gospel in open-air settings to thousands of people in Britain, America, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Bermuda, Gibraltar, and the Netherlands. He is attributed to having preached 18,000 sermons and up to 10 million people in his lifetime, and in playing an integral part in the 18th-century Protestant Great Awakening in both Britain and the USA.
He consistently preached a message of repentance and faith in Christ, of salvation by the grace of God, and of the necessity of being born again. In addition, he reminded Christians that we are to humble ourselves and pray for those that are lost:
“When you hear of a notorious sinner, instead of thinking you do well to be angry, beg of Jesus Christ to convert, and make him a monument of his free grace.” #GeorgeWhitefield

Before I was born again, if anyone had asked me if I was a Christian, I would have promptly replied, “Yes.” That’s really a pretty scary position to be in, if you think about it, as I don’t believe that was actually true of me. Looking back there was no real change in my life until the day I saw myself as a sinner in need of a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. That was over 45 years ago when I called out to Him in repentance and faith, when He changed the bias of my soul.
“True repentance will entirely change you; the bias of your souls will be changed, then you will delight in God, in Christ, in His Law, and in His people.”#GeorgeWhitefield
“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.” Psalms 37:4-6

“Though they have a Christ in their heads, they have no Christ in their hearts.” #GeorgeWhitefield
George Whitefield’s full quote is as follows: “There are many who go on in a round of religious duties, who think that they will go to Heaven when they die. But if you examine them, though they have a Christ in their heads, they have no Christ in their hearts.”
This quote from George Whitefield puts me in mind of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, when Christian comes upon two men, Formalist and Hypocrisy. He witnessed them tumbling over the wall instead of entering through the narrow gate at the beginning of the path. Christian confronts them with the question, “Don’t you know that it is written that he who does not come in by the door but climbs up some other way is a thief and a robber?” (John 10:1)
This allegory reminds us that we must come through Jesus; He is the door. There’re no shortcuts; no tumbling over the wall; no other way of salvation. It is only through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for our sins, that salvation became available to all who will come to Him in repentance and faith. But, you must come through the door; you must come through Christ.
“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved…” John 10:9
A timely reminder to any and all who have a knowledge of Christ but don’t actually know Him.
