Saturday Sayings AUG 2026: AW Pink

Arthur Wellington Pink, better known as AW Pink, was an English Reformed Bible preacher, teacher and author. He was born in England in 1886, saved by the grace of God in 1908, and became an itinerant preacher in 1920. In 1922, AW Pink began writing a monthly periodical titled Studies in the Scriptures which he continued doing until his death in 1952. He pastored churches in the United States, Australia, and Scotland and is regarded as one of the most influential Christian authors of the 20th century.

“The great mistake made by people is hoping to discover in themselves that which is to be found in Christ alone.” #AWPink

In this quote he rightly points out that it’s a mistake to think we don’t need Christ or that we’re can do better without Him. A person may see themselves as successful, have a huge of social media presence, or be a leader in their community, but any righteousness that they may think they have is as filthy rags when compared to the true righteousness that is found in Christ alone. The truth is we are all sinners and are guilty of breaking the law of God. There’s nothing we can do in our our strength that can change our standing with God. We must come to the end of ourselves and turn to Christ in repentance and faith. It is then that God will begin to look at us and see His Son.

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

Philippians 3:8-9 further elaborates this truth:

“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.” Philippians 3:8-9

In the end, it’ll make no difference what you think of yourself, or what others think of you. In the end it will only matter what God thinks of you.

In Arthur Pink’s book, The Attributes of God, he biblically explains God’s divine holiness, sovereignty, mercy, grace, justice, and wisdom. Here’s one of his quotes concerning the grace of God:

“Grace can neither be bought, earned, or won by the creature. If it could be, it would cease to be grace.” #AWPink

Simply put, salvation is by grace through faith alone. The gospel is a revelation of the grace of God in which salvation is achieved through Christ’s atoning death on the cross, and which we receive by faith alone. Salvation is a gift; it cannot be earned; it is God’s unmerited favor toward helpless sinners.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”Ephesians 2:8-9

“Nothing is too great and nothing is too small to commit into the hands of the Lord.” #AWPink

Back in the late 1990s or early 2000s while working for Delta Air Lines in Dallas I forgot to bring my lunch with me one day. We only had a 30 minute lunch break so going out for lunch was not an option. Normally whenever I forgot my lunch I’d just get something from one of the vending machines but on this particular day I didn’t have any money with me. Oops! I was hungry but was also too embarrassed to ask someone for lunch money, so I just sat down alone in the break room like everything was just fine.

As I sat there thoughts of a recent sermon from my pastor came to mind. In it he reminded us that God wants to meet our needs and that He knows our needs even before we ask. (Matthew 6:8) He also reminded us that God wants us to pray about everything, big or small. So I prayed a short prayer and asked God to provide something for me to eat, and to help me to not be so embarrassed to ask someone for lunch money. Before long my lunch break was over and I went back to work with an empty stomach.

A couple of hours later, still hungry and feeling a little down, I took my afternoon break and stepped outside into a guarded exit area to make a phone call. Out of the blue, the guard on duty said, “Hello!” and offered me a slice of her pizza that she had just gotten delivered! Of course I accepted it and I was so grateful! It was delicious!! I told her that both she and the slice of pizza were an answer to prayer. It brought a smile to both of our faces and I made a new friend. It was also a tangent and timely reminder that God is a loving God and that nothing is ever too small or insignificant to pray about. Nothing is too big to pray about either. God is not limited in His ability to act upon any of our requests and is sovereign in anyway He so choses to respond.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”Philippians 4:6-7

“Instead of a river, God often gives us a brook, which may be running today and dried up tomorrow. Why? To teach us not to rest in our blessings, but in the blesser Himself.”  #AWPink

In 1 Kings the prophet Elijah was sent by God to confront King Ahab concerning his worship of Baal, the false god of rain and fertility. Elijah was sent to declare to all of Israel that the Lord God was the one true God. Elijah did as he was told and he also prayed for a drought which he then prophesied to Ahab. God answered his prayers. Elijah did as God instructed him and went to the brook Cherith where he was sustained by bread and meat delivered to him by ravens and by the water from the brook. Eventually the brook dried up and God sent him on to his next mission.  While Ahab continued in his worship of Baal, Elijah continued in his worship of God and eventually was sent back by God to oppose Ahab which marked the beginning of the end of Baal worship in the northern kingdom of Israel.

Elijah was an ordinary man who loved God and became an extraordinary prophet. He trusted God no matter what, in drought or in plenty.
