Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) is my featured theologian for the month of April. He was born and reared in England in a Congregationalist family, saved in a Primitive Methodist Church, became the greatest Baptist preacher in history, and was both a Calvinist and a Baptist. Known as “The Prince of Preachers,” his convictions were formed early and deepened with time. He strongly opposed any kind of diluted Christianity, and his conviction of the inerrancy and sufficiency of Scripture never wavered.
The following quote is the first line from a 1886 Charles Spurgeon sermon titled, “The Heart of the Gospel.”
“The heart of the gospel is redemption, and the essence of redemption is the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ.”#CharlesSpurgeon

As we approach Resurrection Sunday, this is a timely reminder that Christ died for our sins and took the punishment that we deserved. Our redemption was purchased by His blood; redemption is the heart of the gospel.
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.” Ephesians 1:7
And, the essence of redemption is the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ.
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
May the depth of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for us be ever realized in our hearts and minds. Amen

The Bible contains several warnings about a falling away from the faith, also know as apostasy. The Bible also contains everything that believers need to know about faith in Jesus and how to live for Him. Here are some biblically based and practical steps.
- Remember the gospel by which you have been saved and hold fast to His Word.
“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:17, ESV)
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,” 1 Corinthians 15:3
“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you-unless you believed in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:1-2
- Cling to the One who is true, Jesus Christ, and do not forsake Him.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.” 1 Timothy 4:1
- Recognize the false, speak out against it, and do not adore it.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:8-9
- Rest assured in His finished work on the cross, study the scriptures, and focus on what He would have you to do.
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

He that perverts truth shall soon be incapable of knowing the true from the false. If you persist in wearing glasses that distort, everything will be distorted to you. #CharlesSpurgeon
The key word here is truth. Jesus is truth.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
Who are you listening to and/or who might you be leading astray?
Are we listening to or following someone who is perverting the truth of God’s word in their everyday life and/or in false teaching? If so, our view of God is likely distorted as well. Likewise, if we’re personally perverting the truth of God’s word due to our unbelief, our ignorance, or by our own sinful choices we’re guilty of distorting the truth of God’s word, and likely leading unbelieving onlookers astray as well.
We are without excuse.
Even if you’ve never stepped into a church or read any part of the
Bible, God has made Himself known to all by general revelation.
“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” Romans 1:20
And while He is more than loving towards us and extremely patient with us,
“But thou, O Lord, art a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness and truth.” Psalm 86:15
Sooner or later we will face the end of our life on earth.
“And the LORD said, ‘My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.'” Genesis 6:3
Actually no one is guaranteed to live to be old. So if you’re wearing distorted glasses take them off and seek the truth while it may be found!
“Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near;” Isaiah 55:6
And, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” 2 Corinthians 6:2

I’ve been told by more than one person, whose names shall be withheld, that my weekly writings are a bit lengthy! 🧐
So today I have what I think is the perfect quote from Charles Spurgeon for this last Saturday in April, and it begs no further explanation. It’s short, to the point, and profoundly true.
